Support

Supporting people living with dementia and family carers at our 2018 conference

Our International Dementia Conference provides support to enable people with dementia and family carers to attend. People with dementia have informed the ways we support their conference experience over many years, and this will be no different in 2018 when we will have a number of supports in place.

For example, delegates with dementia and carers have requested a second room in addition to the 'Chill-Out Room' that we have offered at previous conferences. Consequently, in 2018 we are delighted to be able to also offer the 'What’s Happening Room' which will enable people with dementia and carers to catch up with friends and plan your conference activities.

We are also aware that conference venues can be challenging to navigate for everyone, including people with dementia. We are therefore pleased to offer a ‘How Can I Help’ person available to support you at all times during the conference.

We welcome any questions you may have about attending our conference, but some commonly asked questions are:

Can I submit an ePoster and paper?

Call for papers closed on the 24th November. We had a great response from people with dementia and carers who will be presenting at the conference.

Call for Posters is open until the 29 March 2018. There is still an opportunity to share research, or your experience, stories and your views. Sometimes people don’t submit posters because they need a little help to develop their thinking and concepts or hep to design the poster. We can help with this. You may also find the submission process too complicated. If you need help in any way, just give us a call and one of the team will be happy to help +61 2 8437 7355 .

Will people with dementia and carers be presenting?

Absolutely! We have had a wonderful response and have a number of people with dementia presenting and taking part in panels. Agnes Houston MBE will also report back via video link on what she we have been doing together since our last conference. You may not always hear about all our speakers who have dementia in advance of the advertised program. That is because we recognise that a person with dementia may not chose to be promoted as a presenter until nearer the time of the conference. Respecting privacy and confidentiality is also important, and as such we do not always identify if a person has dementia in the program.

How can I get support to attend?

Our conference includes a significantly discounted rate to enable people with dementia and carers to attend. We recognise that this may still be a barrier to attending, and if so, the most important thing is to contact us. We do have a budget available to support people to attend which is determined on an individual basis, but some things to note are:

  • We seek to support delegates coming from different parts of Australia
  • We prioritise support for people who have not attended a conference of this type before

A ‘How Can I Help’ person will be available at all times to ensure we provide additional support to enhance your experience as a delegate or speaker.

If you have any questions at all about how we can support you as a person with dementia or family carer to attend the International Dementia Conference, please don’t hesitate to phone our conference team on +61 2 8437 7355, or send us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
