This successful campaign provides 6 sets of our five Dovetale Press dementia-friendly series to 20 New Zealand public libraries. That's 600 books in all, or a set of books for shared reading in a group of six people at 20 public libraries across New Zealand.
We are working with Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA), Alzheimers NZ and Dementia NZ, so that local Alzheimers and Dementia associations can liaise with the public libraries who hold dementia-friendly book groups. We encourage dementia-friendly book groups to be held regularly, so that the readers can get to know one another and their public library, gaining confidence and connection.
Dovetale Press books retain the voice of the original author, while reducing the memory load on the reader. They are beautifully illustrated with classic art and use large print on white contrast paper for easy viewing. They are each 64 pages in length.
We have produced the Dovetale Press series after years of research into reading and dementia, through the University of Otago and with support from Bupa NZ. We believe that dementia-friendly book groups can encourage:
- appreciation of classic writing;
- enhanced personal identity;
- cognitive stimulation;
- self-confidence and reduced self-stigma.
