The myRyman Life Model of Dementia Care challenges perspectives on dementia commonly held by staff, families and residents and supports people living with dementia to live in the moment, feel kindness, love, security, promoting spontaneity, laughter, and happiness in the moment.
The model of care consists of four quadrants:
- Demystifying dementia
- Making sense of my world
- Destressing the environment
- Quality of life
The model was created over 18-months in consultation with people living with dementia and their carers, dementia care specialists and organisations. The model aligns with Ryman’s core philosophy of kindness developing a unique perspective on dementia, equipping the care team with specialised knowledge and skills to provide supportive compassionate care.
This programme will be rolled out to all Ryman villages through introduction seminars for all staff and relatives, an eLearning interactive support tool and a formal myRyman Life Dementia Care Qualification through Otago Polytechnic.
The eLearning support tool for all staff, residents and families is designed to increase knowledge and understanding about dementia, provide guidance on supporting a person with dementia to live a full, happy and content life, while supporting the shift from task-based care to experience-based care and from doing to being.
